Malaysia bans Hindraf for exploiting Malaysian Indians

The Malaysian government has banned the Hindu Rights Action Front (Hindraf), which claims to speak for the country's two million-plus ethnic Indians, a bulk of them Tamil Hindus, for exploiting the Indian community and posing a threat to public order. The ban came Wednesday, precisely a year after the body sought registration from the Registrar of Societies.

PRICE OF PROTEST: The five ethnic Indians will have to serve their two-year prison term.
HARD TO WORK: Reports say work permits for existing Indian workers in Malaysia will not be renewed.

No ban on Indian workers, says Malaysian minister

The ban, which took effect from Dec 31, 2007, could further strain relations between the two countries.
